LASIK Eye Surgery
in Gastonia, NC.

Have you ever imagined waking up in the morning and seeing the alarm clock, or being able to drive a car, watch a movie, or enjoy sports such as swimming, golf, and skiing without contacts or glasses? Or just being able to go on vacation without having to pack an extra suitcase for your contact lens solution and spare glasses? Now with the advent of laser technology, vision correction has entered a new era. Whether you are nearsighted (myopic), farsighted (hyperopic), or have astigmatism, laser vision correction is the most technologically advanced method available today to reduce your dependence on glasses and contact lenses.

LASIK and Laser Vision Correction in Gastonia, NC

Are you tired of relying on glasses or contact lenses to see clearly? LASIK eye surgery may offer an alternative for people who want to reduce their dependence on corrective eyewear. At Gaston Eye Associates, we provide laser vision correction evaluations and treatment options for patients in Gastonia, Dallas, and surrounding Gaston County communities.

Our team helps patients understand their options, determine whether they are appropriate candidates, and make informed decisions about their vision. Whether you’re interested in LASIK or exploring alternatives such as PRK, a comprehensive evaluation is the first step toward understanding which treatment may be right for you.

What Is LASIK Eye Surgery?

LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a type of refractive eye surgery that uses laser technology to reshape the cornea. By changing how light focuses on the retina, LASIK can correct certain refractive errors and reduce the need for glasses or contact lenses.

LASIK may be used to treat several common vision conditions:

  • Nearsightedness (Myopia): Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly.
  • Farsightedness (Hyperopia): Difficulty focusing clearly at certain distances.
  • Astigmatism: Blurred or distorted vision caused by an irregularly shaped cornea.

Not every patient is a candidate for LASIK. Factors such as corneal thickness, prescription stability, dry eye symptoms, and overall eye health can affect whether laser vision correction is appropriate.

Benefits of LASIK Vision Correction

For suitable candidates, LASIK can provide meaningful improvements in uncorrected vision and reduce reliance on prescription eyewear. Many patients consider LASIK because they want greater convenience during everyday activities, exercise, travel, and recreational pursuits.

Potential benefits may include:

  • Reduced dependence on glasses or contact lenses
  • Improved uncorrected distance vision for appropriate candidates
  • A relatively short outpatient procedure
  • Visual improvement that often begins within the first few days
  • Greater convenience during sports and other activities

Individual results vary, and LASIK does not guarantee perfect vision or eliminate the possibility of needing glasses later in life.

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?

Determining whether LASIK is right for you requires more than reviewing your eyeglass prescription. A thorough eye examination and refractive surgery evaluation help identify potential benefits, limitations, and risks.

Factors considered during a LASIK evaluation may include:

  • Age and prescription stability
  • Corneal thickness, shape, and overall health
  • Presence of dry eye disease or other eye conditions
  • Type and degree of refractive error
  • General medical history and medications
  • Realistic expectations about visual outcomes

Patients with certain corneal conditions, significant dry eye symptoms, unstable prescriptions, or other medical concerns may be advised to consider alternatives.

LASIK vs. PRK: Understanding Your Options

LASIK and PRK are both laser vision correction procedures that reshape the cornea to improve how light focuses inside the eye. Although they share a similar goal, they differ in how the surface of the cornea is prepared.

LASIK Eye Surgery

During LASIK, a thin corneal flap is created and lifted so the underlying corneal tissue can be reshaped with a laser. The flap is then repositioned. Many patients experience relatively rapid visual recovery, although healing and final results vary.

PRK Laser Eye Surgery

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) reshapes the cornea without creating a LASIK flap. Instead, the surface epithelial layer is removed and allowed to regenerate during healing. PRK may be considered for certain patients whose corneal characteristics or other factors make LASIK less suitable.

Recovery after PRK typically involves more initial discomfort and a longer period of visual stabilization than LASIK. Your eye care provider can discuss which procedure, if either, is appropriate for your eyes.

What to Expect During the LASIK Process

Step 1: Your LASIK Consultation

The process begins with an evaluation of your vision, eye health, prescription, and corneal measurements. Your provider will discuss your goals and determine whether LASIK or another form of vision correction may be appropriate.

Step 2: Preparing for Laser Vision Correction

If you are a candidate, you will receive instructions about preparing for your procedure. These may include temporarily discontinuing contact lens wear, reviewing medications, and arranging transportation on the day of surgery.

Step 3: The LASIK Procedure

LASIK is generally performed as an outpatient procedure using numbing eye drops. Specialized laser technology reshapes the cornea according to the surgical plan. Your surgical team will explain the procedure and what sensations you may experience.

Step 4: Recovery and Follow-Up

After LASIK, temporary dryness, irritation, glare, halos, or fluctuating vision may occur. You will receive instructions about eye drops, protective measures, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointments. Recovery experiences vary, and some symptoms can persist or require additional care.

LASIK Risks and Long-Term Vision Considerations

Although LASIK is an established refractive surgery procedure, it is not appropriate for everyone and carries potential risks. These may include dry eye symptoms, glare, halos, reduced night vision quality, undercorrection, overcorrection, and other complications. Rare but serious complications can affect vision.

LASIK also does not prevent normal age-related vision changes, including presbyopia or the development of cataracts. Patients may still require reading glasses or additional vision correction in the future.

Our goal is to help you understand the potential benefits and risks so you can make an informed decision about treatment.

While laser vision correction has proven overwhelmingly successful in reducing dependence on glasses and contact lenses, the degree of improvement may vary from individual to individual. How well and how quickly your vision improves depends on how well you heal and the severity of your prescription. Although we can’t promise patients “perfect” or 20/20 vision most laser patient with mild to moderate prescriptions do achieve 20/20 vision or are within 1 to 2 lines of 20/20 vision on an eye chart. This means they no longer need glasses or contacts to drive, play sports, watch movies and TV, or to participate in careers requiring excellent vision such as police and fire departments.

Laser vision correction has been common in many countries around the world since the late 1980’s. Many studies have looked at the long-term effects of the laser on the surface of the eye (cornea) and so far have shown without exception that there are no long-term negative effects on the eye’s integrity or strength. The first nearsighted person ever treated with laser vision correction was in the United States in 1987. That person achieved 20/20 vision following the treatment and is still 20/20 more than a decade later. The majorities of our patients treated have achieved 20/20 vision following the procedure, and are still 20/20 today with no difficulties. In general, few patients may require a re-treatment and if it does become necessary it is typically performed during the first year after the procedure and usually at no additional cost to you.

There are two kinds of laser vision correction procedures, LASIK and PRK. Both techniques are effective laser procedures for the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Both use a precise, cool laser beam of light to gently reshape the front surface of your eye; on the corneal surface with PRK or beneath the corneal surface with LASIK. Ultimately, both procedures offer a 98% chance of achieving 20/40 or better vision. There are, however some significant differences between the techniques (LASIK/PRK). Some doctors and patients are comfortable with the PRK procedure. However, most doctors and patients prefer LASIK because of the faster visual recovery, little to no post-procedure discomfort and the ability to have both eyes corrected the same day.

The LASIK and PRK procedures themselves are completely painless. There are no needles. Instead, anesthetic drops are used to numb the eye just before surgery begins. After your LASIK procedure, your eye may feel a foreign body sensation or irritation for a few hours, but most patients are quite comfortable after taking a short nap. Dryness in your eyes can last for several days. Following a PRK procedure, you may experience irritation for several days.

There have been no reported cases of blindness from laser vision correction. But, as with any kind of surgical treatment, there are always risks and complication possibilities that will be thoroughly explained at your visit. At Gaston Eye Associates we are proud to state that our rate of vision-reducing complications is less than 1%. The extensive training received by all of our doctors reduces the probability of any risks still further. Our commitment to patient care means that we will always do our best for you before, during and after your procedure. Your eye doctor will review all potential risks in greater detail at your initial consultation.

Although it is always safest to treat one eye at a time, our patients cite many advantages to having both eyes treated the same day. These include convenience, possibly less time off from work, improved balance between your eyes, improved vision, and less chance of night glare. In our experience, most patients prefer to have both eyes treated the same day, or within a few days or weeks of each other.

You can have the procedure and be back to your normal day-to-day activities very quickly. We do our procedures on Fridays, and by Monday most of our patients are able to return to work. During your screening with the Refractive Coordinator we will discuss this with you so that you know your options.
